The major starts at the graduate school of film, the first university in the country, and boasts the nation's best history and tradition. Since 1999, it has been changed to the graduate School of Advanced Imaging Science system in order to pursue a more specialized education and has been operated separately from the film production major in order to acquire academic expertise.
It has produced the greatest number of professors at universities in Korea and abroad, and many major film critics and international film festival programmers come from this major. There are many graduates in related organizations such as the Film Promotion Committee and the Film Resource Center, In addition, we have produced an award-winning documentary director, and has achieved outstanding results not only in academia but also in the field.
The main research field is expanding the aesthetic, historical, technical and philosophical understanding of cinematic phenomena and the specificity of film media to the social cultural dimension of film. In addition, it utilizes the special advantages of the Advanced Imaging Graduate School by linking with animation, arts engineering, digital imaging specialization and academic studies to cope with a new academic trend by broadening the scope of research into various fields such as digital contents and media art. Also, we have been inviting foreign famous scholars to host colloquiums and has been trying to interact with overseas universities and has undertaken various large projects including BK21.
The primary goal is to cultivate talented people with theoretical expertise in the field of film research. The program also provides a balance between theory and reality in connection with Film Making, Film & Animation industry Policy Making and Planning. In addition, by using the specialized interdisciplinary system of Advanced Imaging Graduate School, it is aiming to foster experts for the times with an effective curriculum suited to digital media contents environment.
